Industrial NZ Save money 26 February 2026

Two identical farms, one motor upgrade, $60,000 to $72,000 a year.

Identical operations across two mushroom farms were producing very different energy bills. Tether's benchmarking made the difference visible, pointed to motor upgrades instead of full fan replacements, worth $60,000 to $72,000 a year.

The asset

Two Meadow Mushrooms farms running identical operations on paper, producing very different power bills in practice. Neither farm metered its cooling plant or its fans, so the gap in the bills had no explanation.

What the data found

Tether metered the chillers and the fans on both farms and mapped peak use. The fan motors on the higher-cost farm were the difference, and they could be upgraded without replacing the fans.

What we delivered

The benchmarking put motor upgrades ahead of full fan replacements, at much lower cost for the same saving.

The numbers

  • 25,000 to 30,000 kWh per month in energy reduction
  • $5,000 to $6,000 in monthly savings
  • $60,000 to $72,000 annualised
  • Motor upgrades chosen over full fan replacements

Why it worked

The cheap option was also the right option, and the data could prove it.
